Tennis Without Barriers: A 12-Year Journey with Birkett House School

Type of programme

Hinckley Town Tennis Club has been a leading example of inclusive tennis in Leicestershire for over twelve years. The club runs a well-established disability tennis programme, offering free weekly sessions for children and adults with a range of additional needs. A key strand of this work is the club’s long-standing partnership with Birkett House School, a local special school. Sessions take place outdoors at the club during the summer and move indoors to the Green Towers Centre in winter, ensuring year-round access for all participants.

Example activities

Weekly coaching sessions are provided free of charge and tailored to the needs of pupils and young adults with disabilities. The club covers all associated costs, including equipment, court hire and refreshments, removing financial barriers entirely. Sessions are structured to encourage participation, physical activity and social interaction. Over time, some participants have even progressed into mainstream coaching groups, helping them integrate further into the club’s community.

Feedback from teachers, carers and parents highlights improvements in confidence, fitness, coordination and listening skills. One parent described the programme as “a lifeline” for their child — a space where they can belong, grow and be active in a supportive environment.

What works

The programme’s success lies in its consistency, strong partnerships and commitment to inclusion. By maintaining long-term relationships with schools and disability organisations, the club has created a trusted and familiar environment. Removing financial barriers through free sessions and equipment has significantly increased participation, while the combination of skilled coaches and volunteers has ensured every individual receives appropriate support.

The club’s inclusive approach aligns with broader goals around community wellbeing and social connection — providing not only physical benefits but also a real sense of belonging for participants and families.

What we have learnt

Sustaining this level of provision depends heavily on ongoing funding and volunteer support. As the programme grows, capacity and resources are stretched. Expansion to include more schools and day centres will require additional funding and trained volunteers to maintain quality and consistency across sessions.
